Cordell Hull LakeCordell Hull Lake provides recreational opportunities to millions of visitors. Because of the temperate climate and relatively long recreation season, visitors have many opportunities to fish, hunt, camp, picnic, boat, canoe, hike, ride horseback, and enjoy the outdoors in many other ways. Cordell Hull Lake is located on the Cumberland River in Clay, Jackson and Smith counties of Tennessee. The dam is located about five miles upstream from the city of Carthage, Tennessee. The dam was started in May 1963 and was completed and open for operation in November 1973. The dam was created for the primary purpose of navigation, hydropower generation, and recreation. It provides an adequate river channel depth and modern lock facilities for thru river traffic from just above Nashville, Tennessee to the head of navigation near Celina, Tennessee. Cordell Hull Lake provides a wide array of recreational fun as well as relaxation. For the fishermen/women, it provides some of the best fishing in the state of Tennessee.
